Welcome, D1-X14
The new building is ... nice. We like the new building. We like being like everyone else. Uniformity is the key, you see - fit in. I thoroughly enjoy my corporate issued mug and my khaki-colored half-cube walls. I'm in the "Rust" colored wing D, Floor 1, location X14. From my location, I can see the business of about 80 people. Their comings, their goings, their visitors. How many trips the bathroom they take. Too many trips? We may need to talk about that.
Won't you join us? I know D1-X12 and and D1-X10 are currently available. You can have your corporate issued ID number, location number and mug, too. You know you want to.

Cult TV meme
Watched obsessively? Bold them. Watched regularly but not obsessively? Italic them. Watched at least one episode but not regularly? Do nothing. Never watched? Underline them.

Reconstituted Frozen Super-Concentrated Coffee Sludge
YUCK.
The new building has these spiffy machines that take a thawed box of coffee concentrate and adds hot water to it to make "coffee".
It tastes like ass.
It's flat and you can tell it's lots of hot water. Then you get this wave of bitter that doesn't have any redeeming qualities.
It's sad. The "bad" coffee that was at the old building was at least brewed/drip stuff. It was passable with enough sugar.
This stuff just isn't.

Full Speed Ahead!
I watched the last episode of Season 2: Buffy (Becoming, Part 2). It was EXCELLENT! It has some really neat scenes and some great lines.
"Mom, I don't have time to explain right now. I have to go and save the world." "If you walk out of this house, don't come back." She walks out.
Joss is very good at cliffhangers. So good, in fact, that despite the late hour I had to watch the first episode of season 3 (Anne). It was good, too!
So, on to Season 3. I'll need to swipe season 4 from someone.

The Move
I move to our new building this Friday. More than half the company has moved already, which means the old building is a bit creepy in parts. There are empty desks and chairs all over the place. Some desks even have computers still on them. It's strangely quiet; there's no bustle of people, ringing of phones or clacking of computer keys.
Eerie.
Welcome to the new Yahoo! Mail System...
...you have (2167) new messages in your Inbox.
Ugh.
Spam-o-riffic. I think I hit the button to pop in my Umich mail twice. It should have only let me hit it once. All those spam messages were from Umich. I know this because it happily drew them in a blue color.
So, I've disconnected my Umich address from my Yahoo address in the X500. I added a "vacation message" that tells people to not e-mail me at umich anymore, and to just email Yahoo. Hopefully with the disconnect, I'll get less spam in Yahoo. We'll see.
So far, the new Yahoo! System isn't bad. It was slow yesterday, but seems to be okay today. And since I'm a "Mail Plus" member (IE: I pay a fee), I get NO ADD BANNERS anymore! Yay! That was really annoying me before -- I paid for my e-mail, and yet, saw advertisements. I have 2 GB of mail space now, too, so no worries that I'll ever come close to filling it.

A Very Special All New GTVS
We're playing tonight, which should be fun! With the completion of the two Amber games in the last 2 months, I'm feeling the effects of roleplaying withdrawal.

To-Do, Part 2
Managed to knock two off the list between swim class. I hope it stops raining soon -- I was hoping to mow the front lawn and possibly start the hillside tonight while Jay is at aerobics.
I'd love to start on the cabinets, but I'm not so good with the detail stuff. I'll need the sweetie for that. Might be a good Saturday afternoon project ;)

To-Do
Ever growing, it seems:
Straighten/Arrange basement in case the MES wants to use it
Clean Basement from construction mess
Anchor the newest wall to the floor
Clean the house for Saturday evening
Mow the front lawn, start on the back(?)
- Begin terraforming the back hillside to receive wildflowers...
- Put handles on the kitchen cabinets
Ideally, these will be done before Saturday.
Hmph. That looks like a lot.
Comments....
..Are now working. I think. There's something fishy about the archive system in relation to comments, but I'll have to sort that out when I hit a slower patch at work or home.

Swimming!
Two weeks ago, I officially joined the Washtenaw County Rec Center. I signed up for an Adult Swim class and attended the first meeting of it last week. It was fun! I learned a bit, and found out that I'm one of the faster swimmers in the class. I know how to swim, just not properly. I can backstroke fine but need some work on improving the "Front Crawl". I mostly need to learn how to breath. I can't seem to keep water from intruding into my sinuses, despite the fact that I'm blowing bubbles like they suggested. I know I'm doing something wrong ;)
I went Sunday to the adult lap swim to practice a bit. My endurance is pretty low -- I managed 25 minutes before I was too tired to move any more. I'm told this will improve swiftly at first. I'm hoping it's a logarithmic curve!
I'm planning on trying two days a week (Wednesday swim class and Sundays) for a few weeks, then working up to three days. The three days will be easier to manage when class isn't on Wednesday -- I like to spread the days out as evenly as I can, and it's hard to do when working with Wednesday.
All in all, I'm enjoying the experience.
Season 2
I'm now on the third disk of the second season of Buffy. I'm liking how the writers are developing Willow and Giles. They seemed a bit one-dimensional before; now they're appearing as people.

We're at 50% power, Captain...
A few months ago now, I asked my boss if I could get a second computer for my desk. When I'm querying our big (slow) server, it can take anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours to get results out of the thing. While it's querying, I can't really do anything else computer-intensive, or the time to get results increases a lot.
So, I got a second machine. Over the long weekend, though, our IT department decided in it's infinitely pointy-headed-wisdom to force a VB script to every machine every time you log into the network that opens an HTML page showing you how much space you've used on your personal drivespace. It flags you with a Green, Yellow or Red light, depending on whether your under, near or exceeding your alloted 500 megs.
Only problem is -- it makes my machine sieze up. I can forcefully abort the task, but by doing so, it doesn't finish connecting to the network and causes problems with the OS. The OS complains that "a window was shut down, we recommend you restart." It lags horrible when attempting to do anything -- including just moving the mouse pointer.
Lovely.
I've had a trouble ticket on the thing since Tuesday. It's taken 3 tech guys these past two days to determine that they have no idea what to do. They may be taking my advice from yesterday -- burn my files off the thing onto a CD and get me another PC. I just need my files (which are in one folder) and two programs installed on the new machine, and I'm running again. Should be pretty easy.
I guess it's not easy. Red tape, probably. So, while I set and wait for my machine to run this query, I can't do much else beyond surfing. Suprisingly, IE doesn't take much in the way of system resources.
I have a ton of projects on my plate, and I'm running at probably 50% efficiency. My boss will just have to understand.
