The Next Phase in Reality TV

Boy Meets Boy

It's on cable, but it's getting there. I think the alarming thing about the show is that some of the 'gay' boys are straight people who get money if they fool the gayboy into picking them from the dating candidates.

Back Now

The cabin...was. Relaxing until the kids arrived. Then it was a constant stream of slamming doors, screaming and overall chaos for the sake of self-entitled chaos.

I've also decided that not ALL kids are like theirs. I think I know what it is that bother me about *MOST* kids, though - people don't treat them like PEOPLE. They treat them like kids.

I'm all for creative expression. Playing. Dancing in circles for no real apparent reason or running around the house with a Power Ranger in hand making swooping-flyey noises and vanquishing evil. But, I've got a problem when you're mid-conversation and you turn to someone younger than you and change your tone completely, start to incorporate garble talk or baby talk and generally talk in a condescending fashion because you think that's what they want to hear. It's a vocabulary shift, a tonal shift and an attitude shift. I guess it boils down to respect. Kids are people, too. Not people-in-training or people-in-development, but real people with real feelings, real thoughts and their own individual mode of expression as well as the capacity to communicate. I think you can hold intelligent conversations with kids, if you try. I think kids can be kids and not act as stupid as some parents talk to them and make them out to be.

So, in short, I guess it was an okay weekend. I just have issues with how the kids are treated. How they're treated seems to be how they respond and interact with the world.

I rode back with dad-in-law, which was actually quite pleasant. He's all bark, I've learned.

I'm 'Exciting'

via Form Follows Function

51 TO 60 POINTS: Others see you as an exciting, highly volatile, rather impulsive personality; a natural leader, who's quick to make decisions, though not always the right ones. They see you as bold and adventuresome, someone who will try anything once; someone who takes chances and enjoys an adventure. They enjoy being in your company because of the excitement you radiate.

My how we grow....

I'm a pack-rat by genetics. I usually go through my collecting piles of stuff every once in a while to expunge what I don't need anymore. I mostly restrict my pack-ratness to computer things, books, mp3s, and things from school.

Last night, I was having a rough time heading to bed (mostly because of my frustration with my professor), so I combed through some old papers of mine. I wanted to see if I could pitch anything. I've kept just about every essay I've written that had comments on it. I read a bit, and realized that I don't write like I used to. Granted, the essays were from 1998 and 1999, but still.

It's odd what 4 years will do, eh?

Hmph. I'm a loon...

Dworkin was a member of the royal family of Chaos until he rebelled and drew the Pattern - the supreme artifact of Order. It was he who was Amber's first king and the father of Oberon. Somewhere during this time, his humanform became hunch-backed, though he still retained the power of shapeshifting. A sorceror of unimaginable power, he was rendered unstable for awhile because of his intimate link to the Pattern - drawn using the Jewel of Judgement and his own blood. By the time Merlin meets him in Roger Zelazny's Knight of Shadows, Dworkin had recovered from his malady and was still enigmatic.

From School...

With my papers in the medieval drama class, I turned in a self-addressed stamped envelope so that I'd get my papers back with comments. Here's what the grader (I think the GSI graded this one for me) said:

"A. You write with forceful clarity and think in intellectually provocative ways. This is a compelling essay, with sensative readings of the play's power dynamics. Excellent work."

I think that first part is GSI-lingo for "wow, you're a little weird and your essay beat me over the head with your weird point."

I'll take that as a compliment ;)

Thursday Thursday Thursday

Staying late tonight at work. I've been trying to do more overtime, so that our bank accounts don't look so grim. So far, it's working out okay. I'm attempting 5 files a night - which equates to about an hour and a half of work. And I get paid for 5 hours of work for doing it. If I target 5 a day for 7 days, that puts me at 35 files, which with this odd tiering system we have (the first 25 files are at 1 file =1 hour, the next 10 are at 1 file = 1.5 hours, anything after 35 is 1 file = 2 hours), I'll get 40 hours of overtime for the week. In effect, that'll double my salary.

Hopefully this will help. I want more RAM for my computer, and possibly a bigger video card. And we need cash for closing, most likely.

Zyrtec

Been feeling quite aweful the last several days. Tired, fuzzy headed, not all there. Not coherent. I have had to make an effort to think. I started taking Zyrtec last Thursday because we're heading into the worse apart of the allergy season for me.

Read the bottle to my allergy meds this morning:
"May cause drowsiness." Hmph. Okay. I don't remember having this side effect before, though
"This may intensify with alcohol." Doh!

Friday night bowling: 2 oberons.
Saturday: 1 oberon at AFDS.
Sunday: A margerita at Wendi's.

NO WONDER I've felt like a dope-head. *sighs*

Why do you roleplay?

I roleplay because ... it's a way to stimulate my imagination in a setting where I don't look like a loon ;) It's a way to release all the excess energy that just sits in my brain.

I generally roleplay all day in my head. Just because. I'll be walking to class, or in from work, and imagine what would happen if I suddenly grew 50 foot tall, yelled "YOU SHALL NOT PASS" and pointed a nasty looking sword at a coworker. Or, I might pass a tree and think "GREEN" in hopes that it might just suddenly leaf, flower and become spring. Or I might pass a huge mound of snow and think "THAW" in hopes it might just go away so spring can start.

Or I run through scenarios in my head. Or I think about battles in the diag, or at work, or political espionage in the English Department. I imagine teleporting from work to class, or activating a waypoint from the flagpole at work to the diag.

I've discovered that roleplaying is a good outlet for it. I can spit out all this whirlwind and it can DO something other than just whirl about in my head. I used to just daydream a lot about it all. Or talk to myself about it when no one was around. But no, I jot things down that I can do in games. Or imagine Aelric flying across the field to thrash someone with a sword. And then I try and use it in a game sometime ;)

What do you look for in a game?

I look for someone who will put as much effort into the game as I think I do, if not more. I want people I know, mostly, because I'm always worried about looking like a loon to strangers. For whatever reason. *shrugs* I look for fun players and people who I like spending time with (even if our characters don't get along). So, I guess it's social for me, too.

But I also like variety in a game. I like depth of story, where *I* get options. Checklists make me a bit nervous, because I feel like something is going to happen whether I want it to or not. Planned scenes can be okay, as long as at some point in the game I get a chance to do my thing. It takes me a while to find a character's voice, but once I do - I want to do things. Not have things done to me.

Do you consider yourself a good player?

This, I have no clue on. An Ambercon person claims I am, but I think I just click well with certain people. I'm not a terribly aggressive person, so I need a GM who's mindful of fair and equal time to players in order to really do much of anything. And, while I do like roleplaying, I'm also an introvert - which means I need alone-time to recharge resources. When I've not had any down-time, I tend to be a bit cranky and really don't roleplay well. By Sunday of Ambercon, I'm usually quite spent. Taking slots off helped a LOT.
