And on the 5th day he rested..

SO busy, that I decided to take a day off.

So I did. The project is at a point now where we're waiting on our IT department to get us a file-format and information about how we're going to be getting our raw data output from our loan system. Until I have that, I can't proceed with the final part of the database.

The CIS guy has other things he could be doing today, anyways, so I was off the hook. yay.

I started the "vacation" with 3 episodes of Trading Spaces late last night, which have been waiting for me on TiVo for a week now. I can honestly say I'm adicted to the show now. I want ideas for the new place .. but there's also this "game show" or sometimes a "train wreck" aspect of the show that's facinating. I've so far determined I hate Hilda's designs. I like Vern's most of all.

I'm going to play some games for a bit, shower ... hit the store for chili stuffs, and possibly call my mom for some pointers on a decent chili recipe. I've checked allrecipes.com for a recipe, and got way too many hits to sift through. And, some of them include ingredients like strong brewed coffee, cola, or beer ... so I'm just not sure about them ;)

Then, tonight, we're heading to my folks after Jarrod gets home from work to celebrate my Dad's 43rd birthday.

The Week of Busy-ness

Oi. It's been hectic at work ALL WEEK. The basic reason is that I've been volunteered to "assist" in developing a database for this new project. The project is a Quality initiative within our company, an internal auditing system to try and catch issues with colleagues faster than the current external auditing process is taking (and if we can catch it sooner, we reduce our exposure rate on losses).

The project is head by someone in the customer service department, but it will primarily look at people in my department first. They tapped my boss as a departmental advisor, since the departments are distinctly different and operate with different terms, divisions (we're divided by product type, they're divided by region), etc. She, naturally, tapped me to assist their database guy with developing this.

And lo'and'behold, I'm a bit stronger on the Visual Basic and MS Access sides. So it's not so much an advisory role as a co-equal partnership role.

He's a computer information systems grad (Computer prog for businesses) from EMU - but they coded primarily in C++. Visual Basic is nothing like C++ except in the VERY FUNDAMENTAL ideas that most/all programming languages share (loops, true/falses, if then else, those concepts). So, he's good at figuring out how something needs to work logistically. But not very good at the syntax of VB. He's gotten a lot better since Monday, though. He catches on fast.

All in all - hectic week of coding. I can make access do random selections from a population and push that into a table for doing more work on. I'm learning more and more SQL, which will be helpful in other database arenas. Good stuffs.

Ack Ack

Kristen found an article that is good for her and jack, but bad for Jarrod and I. This article says that the housing market might take a dip.

Good for them in that prices will go down and they can afford more house.

Bad for us in that prices will go down and we'll get less for ours.

Let's just hope we sell before George's War, and they buy after?

Dinner was great last night. I had a meeting at 9 pm, and didn't even think to e-mail out to let folks know I might not attend. We ended up chatting until 9:30! Oops ;)

But it was fun. I'm glad we got the coupons again this year. We almost didn't - budgetting helps keep things on track.

I had Ruby Red Trout in Apricot butter with rice pilaf - which was just amazing.

Friday - sub-sonic...

Having a much calmer Friday. Thank goodness.

Stomach has settled - finally. It just needed to think about it, for a bit. Soup in a bread bowl (french onion), helps. I'm rather fond of Panera.

Spring Break

It's spring break. YAY. I like just having time where I'm not required to sit and learn.

Shakespeare and Class

Don't get me wrong - I'm enjoying both classes. I've not read much by Shakespeare. He really does pack a lot into his plays. We've read, thus far:

  • A Midsummer Night's Dream - A romantic comedy

  • The Merchant of Venice - A "comedy" (problematic, though)

  • Henry IV, Part I - history play

  • The Merry Wives of Windsor - comedy

  • Coriolanus - Roman Tragedy

So far, I think my favorite is the Merchant of Venice. In this play is the infamous Shylock - which is where, apparently, that racial slur originated. Shylock is a Jewish Money-lender in the city of Venice. Antonio - the wise and benevolent Merchant of Venice decides to help his dear, dear friend Basanio marry Portia, whose father was rich and who has perished. Basanio is broke, so Antonio borrows money from Shylock to lend to Basanio to give him the funds needed to appear well-to-do and worthy of Portia's hand in marriage. Shylock hates Antonio - Antonio lends money without interest, which hurts Shylock's trade. Shylock also dispises Antonio because Antonio represents all that is Christian towards the Jewish people. The catch - Shylock wants a pound of flesh instead as his interest/bond. Antonio agrees, thinking his business ventures will be successful.

Basanio goes and marries Portia, after selecting the correct 'casket'. Portia's dead father set up a trust for her, that forced all would-be suitors to select one of three caskets as a test for her hand. If the casket contained her picture, they could marry her. Gold, silver and lead they were. (casket is the 'basket' or 'container' sense, not the funerary thing we use). He picks the lead casket, which is correct. He hears from his servent that all of Antonios ships had sunk. Shylock was collecting his bond.

Basanio returns to Venice and Antonio and he contest Shylock's bond in court. Basanio offers to pay Shylock the money, which he declines. Portia, in the meantime, dresses in men's clothing and travels to venice, where she becomes the judge in the case. Shylock argues that the letter of the contract states that he get his pound of flesh from Antonio. Portia asks several times, in several different ways if he'd reconsider. He's adamant. Portia has to state that the bond is legal - since without the money-lender's support in Venice, the economy would fail. Shylock starts to sharpen his knife, when ...

Portia trumps him. "You can have your pound of flesh, but spill ONE DROP of Christian Blood, and execution is the sentence." (paraphrased). Shylock attempts to bargain now for the money Basanio offered. 6000? Nope. 3000? Nope. Wash the debt? Nope. He has to get his pound of flesh. He states he cannot. Portia decrees that ALL that Shylock owns - including his own life - is thus forfiet to the city of Venice. The Duke "grants mercy" and pardon's Shylock, allowing him to live. He takes all of Shylock's property and money, and he's forced to become a Christian.

Portia, who gave Basanio a ring that she said never to part with, in the guise of the man/judge, asks for the ring when Basanio offers to give "him" anything "he" desires. He resists, but gives her the ring.

Portia returns to her home. Basanio follows later. Portia asks where her ring is - and says that their bond of matrimony is dissolved because of his giving away of the ring. In the end, she comes clean that she was judge, gives Basanio the ring back (now it's HER choice, not her dads....), and everyone lives "happily ever after". At least, this is a comedy in that everything is resolved to everyone's benefit at the end.

The play is terribly moving. In this play is the famous speach, much quoted: "Hath not a Jew eyes, hands, organs dimensions. If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? ..." Also, in this play, is an AMAZING moment for 16th century drama. Shylock states in his court scene, as part of his prosecution to uphold his bond, that trade of flesh is already a practiced thing by the people of Venice. He argues that to deny him his pound from Antonio would be like setting their dark-skinned slaves in bondage free, and allow them to marry their daughters, etc. While this isn't precisely advocating emancipation, it does have a resonance of thought about the system of slave-trade in it that problemitizes the industry in comparison to what Shylock wants. "If one is allowes, why isn't the other..."

I liked this play very much. It was moving and powerful in a very haunting, and very problematic way. Our professor said that most teachers shied away from this play because it was so hard to deal with the issues inherant in it - race, class and religious persecution. Mercy versus law, and who's exlcuded and who's included.

I'm going to keep it in my brain (and on this blog) that I want to see this play someday.

Thursday: Mach 1

I felt like I was traveling at Mach 1 all day. ZOOOOOM to get things done. Projects started. Status meetings. Ideas spinning. Whirling.

It was one of those "I can feel the blood in my ears" days, which means my blood pressure was probably high.

That's what a Mach 1 day does, really.

So to unwind - I went out with friends from work. It gave the sweetie "alone time", too, which I think he's been needing. Unfortunately, something didn't agree with me last night. It was either the 3 beers (didn't feel like that kind of sick) or it was the appetizers/munchies we got. Potstickers apparently don't mix well with Irish Ale.

So I was awake at 2:00 am with some aweful stomach pain. 2 immodium ad's later, about an hour and a half of running from the Computer to the Bathroom, and 2 levels on my hardcore Zon later, and was back in bed.

Thus, I'm late this morn. Ugh.

The Day of Nothings

I ran into many, many brick walls. All day.

  • My brother-in-law joined a cult. Or damn close. Amway closed its doors for business and opened up under something called "Quixtar". He's signed up with a branch of Quixtar called "Team of Destiny". It sounds like he deep in. He sent me an email - wanted me to go to the Monthly meeting, which is being held at EMU this month. I researched 4 hours last night to get info on this Team Of Destiny. There's no public info on the company - period. I looked up who owned the URL on a network solutions whois - and a google search on the owner turned up a website explaining the whole Amway to Quixtar to ToD conversion. Explained the business model. I was unimpressed - and moreover, scared that he was getting into something larger than he knew. We chatted back and forth over email today. I just hope he knows what he's doing...

  • We're meeting mortgage people tonight. Ugh. Decisions Have we I to make have. Oi.

  • I'm writing VB code to try and import an awefully laid out text file into a useable Access format. The loop is failing. No real good reason stated why.

  • My sister and I are trying to arrange dinner for Dad's Birthday, and make 8 people's schedule's jive. Between cultTeam of Destiny meetings for the Bro-in-law, Us showing the house and gaming - we're now scheduled for a Friday night. After moving the day 5 times.

I had to study for an exam last night - with no paremeters on what the exam was going to be ABOUT. I muddled through ok, I think. Bish or low A, I'm feeling.

The Eastern Wind Doth Blow...

Snowing this morning. Really, Really wanting something other than cold.

Which! We might be getting. A friend of mine (of Paris Ticket fame) was chatting about doing a Time Share in Cancun. We talk a lot online, and I was excited for her, so I "oooed" and said that I loved the ocean and the beach. I've been to the ocean twice - once to actually be a beach-bound. It was our sophomore-year trip with the band to Florida in February. We performed at a national competition in Florida (where we placed first - woo hoo!) and marched in Disney World's Electric Light's Parade. One of the days was spent on Cocoa Beach, on the Atlantic side. I was just in heaven. Ocean surf sounds, the salty sea breeze, the sun shining in a blue sky meeting the blue water, the golden-brown sand that was always a bit too warm to your feet until you hit the sting of the salt in the water ...

ah.... I could live there. Be a beach bum. I could. I'd miss my internet connection, but I could sit on a beach for forever.

But! Anyways, she started talking about it, and I was excited for her, and she said "Come down with us." I hemmed and hawed, said we shouldn't. She told us the timeshare was already paid for and explained it. Said it would only cost us buddy passes to Cancun (more buddy passes!), and that we'd share a place. I'm still hesitant because "free rides" don't feel right to me, but she told me to "hush" when I offered to help pay for the timeshare.

So! We might be heading to Cancun in April. It'll be a really cheap vacation (which we need), with friends of mine in Kentucky (whom we like).

And it'll time away from snow and cold and gray.

Morning flew by as I've been designing/coding a new form (read: toy) for our staff to use. My boss(es) will like it too - it'll snag into our DB, and extract a list of loans someone did for Overtime. They can print it out and turn that in, rather than having people just "guess" what they did.

Some people have been "guessing" high. Since we're paid overtime based on VOLUME and not TIME - guessing consistantly high is bad.

MoooOOO

Got the buzz the other day - Moo is at the Processor's place. So, I get to call them today and make the processing order. Moo came out to be 435 lbs hanging weight (for the half), for a total of $566.00 for the meat. Processing will cost extra, but the cost per pound will still be significantly lower than the cheap cuts at any grocery store.

We'll foot the bill up front, and arrange delivery and what-not. Once the moo's in A2, we'll divide it up equitiably. Folks are welcome to come by and assist with this, if they want to insure equality. We'll split the cost by 4. Pretty easy :)

Grumpy Monday

Yesterday was bad. Dealing with stupid people all day just frustrates the hell out of me.

I send out e-mails at work to about 250 people, instructing them precisely on how to go about doing something that gets them free stuff - company paid - no strings attached. It's apart of our employee rewards program.

And inevitibly, someone just doesn't get it.

"I don't know what website to go to..." "how to do I get stuff?" "how do I fill out this form? Is 'shipping address' *MY* address or where I want it shipped to?"

Good grief. A. That was in the e-mail. READ IT. B. Where have you been all year? I've explained this to you - in person - twice, now. C. Send it to my address. I could use a new printer.

Fun with Friends!

Both of my sisters chickened out (ok, one was sick and the other was busy with homework), but the evening was way fun. We had a nice dinner at La Fiesta Mexicana, and fun just hanging out and chatting (and drinking a little, too) afterwards. The basement was packed with people.

Which just solidifies the fact that I'm ready for the new house. I want a NICE entertaining space. The space we have works. It's sufficient. I want something more than sufficient, though. I want a place where we can hang out and all be comfortable.

Jack left at 2:30 AM. I haven't stayed up that late in ages. I used to be a night owl :) Hoot Hoot.

Busy Day

Just got hammered today with stuff to do. SPIRIT things, and Visio things, and questions on this, and this meeting, and that meeting. My head's a'spinning.

The Art of Double Booking

We planned on dinner with some (long-lost) friends of ours this evening. And then, this morning, received an invite from another friend for dinner tonight.

Our Friday nights, of late, have been mostly quiet. And thus the Flood Cometh. I'd rather spend time with the friends with the more recent invite, but it'd probably be in bad form to cancel on the friends who asked first.

The Art of Being with Friends in Dubya's Low-budget World

It's tricky. You're on a budget, they're on a budget. You both blog or talk about cash-flow management and whatnot. Dubya's still sitting on his Oiley Arse not doing much to make the economy better.

So!

How does one manage this? Here's some low-budget ideas one can do that are fun and cool, too:

  • A One-Shot game

  • Card games!

  • Video games

  • Potluck Dinner Party

  • Movie Renting

  • Board Games

  • Top of the Park (seasonal)

  • Biking - assumes equipment and season

  • Crafts/Sewing/Stamping

We're usually up for socialization. Occasionally, I decline for reasons of School and Homework. Occasionally, we have previous plans - though it's rarer lately with the disenfranchisement of the "Gay Crowd of Friends." They rarely, if ever, call, and we're weary of one-way efforts - we sat down and realized that with that crowd, we'd initiated the last many things consecutively. We started to wonder.

It's taken some adjustment in our own way of thinking, though, to try to not pester folks with constant social baragement or invites to dinner out - cause we don't want to pester folks and because we've been mainly trying to be mindful of budgets (our own and others) and people's stress that cash issues can cause.

If there's a feeling of lack of communication - it's not intentional.

CARE BEARS!!!!!!

Okay, so I'm out of the closet - I absolutely adored the Care Bears as a child. My grandmother sewed each of her grandkids (the "original 5") three Care Bears. Mine were: Sunshine Bear, Goodluck Bear, and the Racoon Carebear Cousin (can't recall his name ... he had a light bulb on his tummy). Though, for whatever reason, my sisters and I constantly fought over the ownership of Friendship Bear. He was orange with a pair of flowers on his tummy. I say "was" because he's so worn out now that he's brownish looking. He's had two major 'surgeries' (stuffing had to be inserted) and I was the surgeon on both occasions - patching him up with some cotton from mom's sewing basket and using needle and thread to patch the two holes up. Yes, yes, I was a little gay boy. Leave me be :)

But! Found this quiz on the sweeties blog, and had to take it :) I think he put it up there for me!

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I used to say "An Astronaut!". Even after the Challanger Incident ... I wanted to go into space. I wanted to see Earth from the outside. I wanted to peer out into the stars, unobstructed by clouds or atmosphere. I wanted to GO someplace that no one had been to before.

Yes, Yes. Fantasy. "To Boldy go where no one has gone before." When I was in Elementary and Middle school, this was my favorite show. They lived the life I wanted.

And you know what? They still do. Only, I know now that it's t.v. That fact never did break my facination with Up. In high school, I spent several sessions with a school councilor regarding career planning and whatnot. And the first thing I asked was: "Do you have to go to college to be an astronaut? What do you study?" I reseached it. I sent letters to NASA. One was actually returned - with a packet of information about the space program. I still have it stashed somewhere. I joined the Planetary Society. I wanted to try. I intended to major in Aerospace Engineering my first semester in college. I quickly discovered I wasn't interested in any of that, though. I didn't want to design the shuttle. I wanted to ride in it.

I still do.

We've lost the Columbia. Every astronaut knows the risks involved with space flight. They consent to go. If I had the capacity physically to go into space - I'd go to. Even now. Even knowing the risks.

I'd do it in a heartbeat.

My new desk sits on the third floor, near the window. At my eye level is the flag outside of our building. It's been at half-mast since yesterday.

Fly among the stars, Columbia and her crew.

I'm more hurt than I can manage...

So, I don't. I was in shock when the Challenger exploded. I was in ... 4th grade? I think. I just remember the hype beforehand (a teacher in space?!), and the announcement on the school speakers. I was at lunch, I think, in the cafeteria at Williamston Elementary. I can remember the blueish cast to the Gymnasium/Cafeteria. I remember the announcement coming over the speakers. I remember our teachers trying to talk about it with us.

I remember that I wanted to know why god did that. And no one could answer me.

I've been avoiding the news over the last month. I'm tired of listening to George's stupid rhetoric, and the constant news stories about The US government ready to attack Iraq. So, I didn't know when it happened. Jarrod heard it on the news before the game. And when he told me, I was stunned.

And rather than allow it in - I pushed it out. Suppression therapy, we'll call it. But yea. It's on my brain regardless.

Because sometimes you just want to smack your friends...

Not really. But it got your attention, right?

I can't spell. I know this. You know this (if you read this). Spelling was never my schtick. To me, it was always more important to get the ideas down on paper . To make a persuasive arguement or paper with form, eloquence, and thought.

Spelling was important insomuch as bad spelling hurts your authority (ethos). This is why we have spell checkers ;)

My Blog's been improperly titled for some time now. Last week, a friend finally confessed to me that they thought it was wrong.

JEEZ. Tell me sooner next time, please? I don't mind being wrong. We're all human - and I can be wrong. I'm ok with that. Really :)

Though, in my own defense:

intergalactic
adj : between or among galaxies; "intergallactic space"

They had it wrong too ;)

Ah well. Thank you, Gentle Reader, for pointing out the error. It's fixed on all new pages. Old pages, of course, won't be fixed (unless I manually do it). My archiving utility still gives me the terribly specific error "character not allowed on server".
