OOOO! Ahhhhh!

The Two Towers was just ... amazing. There's definitely enough scenery and action to warrent seeing it on the big screen at least one more time. I absolutely LOVED Gimli in this movie - he was the comic relief. Big Battle, a few hundred soldiers manning a wall against Ten Thousand Uruk-Hai:

"Toss Me."
Aragorn gives him a blank look.
"Toss me! I can't jump it on my own. Throw me."
Aragorn reaches for him, he stops him.
"Ah. Don't tell The Elf."
Solomnly, Aragorn replies. "Not a word." He throws the dwarf over the chasm.

I was LAUGHING OUT LOUD. That was just TOO hilarious ;)

Gimli complains about not being able to see over the wall of Helm's Deep. Legolas: "I could describe it to you. Or, we could get you a box."

Gimli standing up at the top of a siege ladder swinging an axe, yelling ... "97....98....99...100!"

I definitely need to see this again.

Reformat!

Went well. I ended up using 10 CDs to back up all my "essential" files. I didn't fill each CD, really, though - I used them to sort as well, to make reinstalling/re-placing the files onto the new OS easier.

WinXP installs *VERY* easily. I'm surprised by this fact. So far, it's world's faster than windows 98. They claim it's "stable" and won't crash the OS if a program is having issues -- we'll see about that one. So far, so good.

Everything is back up to speed, and I installed my new Palm OS Synch-thing software. It integrates with MS Outlook, which is kinda nice. I can keep everything in one application. Of course, if synched all of my outlook contacts, which I mostly only have e-mail addresses in for. So, I need to go through and update from Jarrod and My addresses into Outlook, so it'll synch into the palm.

I'm also trying to decide what to use it all for. Kristen gave me a neat idea about Wine -- there's a wine-review site out there. You can download webpages into your palm, so I can have a Wine database for when I'm out shopping for wine. It'll tell me what the reviewer gave it, and give me an idea of good v bad wines. Sounds neat ;) If you have any other neat ideas with what to do with a PDA, I'd love to hear 'em. It's pretty sparse now.

House links!

It's off of Golfside, on Pearl Road, the 3rd opportunity to turn right off of Golfside.

.
We've a deposit on lot 100. It looks back to woods on the right side of the property line, and a common area for power poles and the backs of houses way away on the left side.

Here's the floorplan:

We're going to ask that the stairs to the basement be moved from the laundry room to the closet with a turn/landing. We'll finish the basement within a year or so on our own (with family and friend's help, hopefully).

Here are the three "elevations":

I think "A" looks the best, and is coincidentally, the least expensive look. The brick just looks extraneous on it.

Holiday Cheer

Our holiday plans: Head after work (which is a 1/2 day, yay!) to home. After home and Jarrod's arrival, we'll leave to my Aunt's house in Dexter for my mom's extended family celebration. She has 7 brothers and sister, she's 6th born of the 8 (but, she had kids so early that I'm the eldest Grandchild by 4 months). One of the brothers lives in Colorado and we only see him occasionally. Still, 7 pairs of people, most of them (all of them, actually) with at least 1 kid, my Grandparents, My great-aunt and her friend (We don't think they're lesbians ... *shrugs*) makes for a nice family gathering of 30 people or so. :) I actually don't mind it much. They're the pleasant half of the family.

We celebrated my immediate family's holiday on Saturday at my sister's new house. Which is really shaping up. They bought a 2000 square foot remodeled HUD home in Mason, MI for *CHEAP*. 110K ish, I think. The more I compare houses in Ann Arbor to other areas, the more I realize that we live in a rather expensive city! Anyway, my dad's parents came to that, which was nice. I like seeing my Grandparents Franklin; I could do without some of dad's brothers and sisters, though. They're fine in small doses and separately, but several of them act as though they were still 6. "She didn't come to my son's birthday party so I'm not going to their Pool party...". Pah-lease. They need a serious dose of reality, sometimes. I guess 10 kids crammed into a 4 bedroom farmhouse will cause that.

Tommorow will be Christmas with the Van Kirks. I like Jarrod's parents - they're amusing. They really know how to push his buttons sometimes, but they don't know where my buttons are installed ;) Their house on the lake (which is now complete!) is really quite nice.

Didn't get a chance to post those images of the house plans, yet. Was ... busy ... with something last night. More on that later ;)

Ghost town

The drive into work was eerie. It's Tuesday and Christmas Eve, I know ... but it was way quiet. Very little traffic on the roads.

The lady at starbucks grabbed a Venti cup and started writing on it as soon as she saw me in line. "Venti French Vanilla Cappacino, right?"

She was damn close. "Latte," I corrected. "I guess I come here way too often, huh?" She just laughed.

Blogger, Eat This ...

I've had many, many posts eaten by Blogger. I found a neat key-combo that works in *most* window's applications, though. Once you've composed your post, while the cursor is still in the post-dialogue box, hold "CONTROL" and press "A", then release both. CNTRL-A is the window's "select all" command. It doesn't work in notepad, but seems to work in everything else I've tried it in. It'll select your entire text (post). Then you can either CONTROL-C for copy, or right click and copy. Then, when you hit the "post" button, if blogger eats the post, you've it backed up on the clipboard to paste back in.

I do that on all my longer posts, now.

Hope this helps!

Coffee tonight with an old (girl)friend ....

It'll be a decaf, of course :D

An old girlfriend contacted me a few weeks ago. We've been e-mailing, and we've decided to meet for coffee and catching up. I had two girlfriends in high school. One, really - I went to prom with the second and we went to a movie once. But hey, I can count that, right?

Anyways, I really had an "easier" time coming out. Only one or two wierdness moments. The old girlfriend was one of them. She was a Calvin College type; pretty religious. I guess it didn't reconcile with her faith. So, we stopped corresponding around 1998.

And then suddenly she e-mailed me. Told me she had seen me on classmates.com, and read over my website. She told me that she'd changed a lot since high school and made a special note about her tolerance for things had changed. Wanted to know how I was, etc etc.

It's been a good correspondance thus far. She really was a bright and interesting person to talk to. I missed the friendship once it was gone. I don't know exactly how much she's changed.

We'll see.

We'll see how

Caffiene addiction sucks

So. The last two weeks of school were bad. I was working all day, then heading to the computer lab to work on the school project website. I was getting home between 10pm and midnight most nights.

As such, I'd grab a latte from a place near whereever we ended up working for the evening. Starbucks, Coffee beanery, ERC, Amers. Whichever.

And now, I start getting tired around 4pmish, and the headache starts. It's clockwork. Some time between 4 and 5, I will get one. I'm certain this is withdrawal.

Ugh. Have got to cut back. I was succombing and grabbing a small cup of coffee here at work. I didn't yesterday afternoon - which was a busy busy busy one at work. ot going to this afternoon, either.

That'll make that hour drive peachy.

I'm Done!

With my semester! Yea. Took my last final yesterday. I think I did good for the amount of effort I put into it. Solid "B", possibly better. I've aced everything else in the course, so I could afford to slack off a bit on the final.

Time was majorly against me this semester. I found myself unable to sit still last night, which was bad. I couldn't relax. Couldn't just ... play. I ended up working a bit on the KFO website. You can see the new revamp here: http://www.forgottenorder.org/users/~fireprophet/kfocopper2/

I'm going to try and use a CSS file to do a bulk of the work. I'm trying to puzzle out how to get the header up there most efficiently. I'm trying to decide whether or not I put the border-grey on the right hand side, too ....

I opted out. I felt nervous about leaving my social security number. They DID say they were a credit reporting agency center, and the people on NPR (credit experts) said that this will work, so I'm going on faith that it will.

They said my request would be processed in 5 days. I elected to be permanently removed from credit lists, rather than just for 2 years. The line also has a section where you can "opt in" to recieve them again.

We'll see if all those credit applications stop comin' for me.

Uh. Yea. This is pretty much dead on.

INFP

You focus deeply on your values and devote your life to chasing ideals... you often draw people together around a common purpose and work to find a place for each person within the group. You're creative and seek new ideas and possibilities. You quietly push for what's important to you, and rarely give up. You might be somewhat gentle or have a good sense of humor, you could be hard to get to know and overlooked by others...you like to make the world more in line with your vision of perfection.

If you're a teenager, you probably have a bit of a rebellious streak. You might argue with others who hold different values than yourself..you probably have a small close-knit group of friends...you can relax around these pals and be pretty entertaining, since you see the world in a different and special way... that's why your posts on the Storm Palace are so great!

Inner harmony is the most important thing to you. You're sensitive and loyal. You have a strong sense of honor concerning your personal values. You'd rather communicate your feelings in writing...

You do best in a flexible situation where the teacher/collegue takes a personal interest in you...you like to interact with your peers, but not TOO much ...you have both creativity and flexibility, and you like that about yourself....you don't get bogged down by details...your job must be fun and it must be meaningful to you....you don't wanna feel conspicuous so you'll sell yourself short just to avoid the spotlight...

You can be a gentle and subtle leader...being indirect and inclusive of others...you don't confront people head-on, but rather work with 'em to get the job done....you lead with your values in mind and let these guide you...you don't like conflict, so you don't confront situations directly.. you'd rather wait for a situation to work itself out....

Leisure and kickin' back is really important to you. sometimes it is hard to separate work from play, huh? when you find a new recreational pursuit, you do a lot of reading up on it...most of your leisure things are done alone, like reading, listening to music, and even BBSing....when you want to be sociable, you can be very charming and outgoing..

Love is a very deep commitment to you...it's not easily attained...you probably pick out flaws or are disappointed when he or she doesn't match up to your ideal as to what love should be like...first dates are very well set up to make sure everything is taken care of so it can be "just right." you might have a hard time sharing feelings about others...you tell so many feelings inside that you forget to tell your partner that you love 'em or whatever....

If the relationship goes bad, you take it to heart, but probably don't tell many others about it....you have a tendency to overreact, huh? Other things to watch for...don't get so caught up in your dreams that you don't consider others' points-of-view...you might not adjust your vision to the facts of a situation...you may need a "reality check" once in a while... also, don't try to please everyone and be so hesitant to criticize... don't delay projects 'cause you're holding out for perfection...it's not gonna come...don't get overly critical because no one matches your perfect ideals... you could lash out and it could get ugly.

From a dear friend...

"No one imagines that a symphony is supposed to improve in quality as it goes along, or that the whole object of playing is to reach the finale. The point of music is discovered in every moment of playing and listening to it. It is the same, I feel, with the greater part of our lives, and if we are unduly absorbed in improving them we may forget altogether to live them."

I finally started last night (specially since the gift exchange thing is next weekend). I figured out what to get my secret santa person, and ordered it online. I didn't even use Amazon's wishlist for them, or anything on the card. I think it'll mean more, that I thought it up. I'm 99.9% sure the gift will be well received.

Which brings me to a discussion the sweetie and I had on Thanksgiving on the way to his folks. 3 medium cups of coffee later ...

And I am AWAKE. Not just "Hi, it's morning", but "GOOOOOOOOOOD MORRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNNING BLOOOOOGGER-LAND!" kind of awake.

A few months ago, one of my supervisors (who's a bigger coffee nut than I am) wanted to see if the work SPIRIT thing I help with could provide the company with a Café service as a monthly event. I looked into it, and found that Sweetwaters Cafe can cater coffee and pastries and bagels, but not espresso drinks. It wasn't feasible for the 800 people in the building, but was manageable for the 250 people in my department. So, management authorized the $1500.00 bill, and I got assigned the task of organizing it all.

I got in early (7:30) to arrange the 8:00pm arrival time - and they had just arrived. Great. So ... scrambled to get it all going NOW, with no preparation. I'm very much a "need to prepare" type person.

Got that all squared away. I was insanely worried there wasn't going to be enough food or coffee/tea/juice for everyone ... but we were fine. Still leftover bagels, coffee and tea available. Thus, during the monitoring/arranging/overseeing/organizing ... I had THREE 16 OZ CUPS OF WONDERFUL SWEETWATERS SAFARI SUNRISE COFFEE.

Definitely feeling that. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I'll need it, too. Group meeting (UGH) from 6-9pm tonight (On a friday, *sighs*). We got torn apart during our presentation yesterday. Everyone stressed that our project was "unique" and the prof was especially "excited" about this thing we're attempting to do ... and in spite of that, made huge critisisms of the site's design, navigation, text, premises ... the whole thing.

Yea. Mixed messages much? We've a lot of work before the Tuesday Midnight deadline. I also have a 5 page paper due Monday. I really shouldn't play in tomorrow's A Far Distant Shore game, but I said "Screw it" and told my group I wasn't available tomorrow to work. This is a prior commitment, and I could use some time just letting my brain be turned off from all this hard-core thinking/working/stressing. So, I'm hoping I can beat someone up tomorrow in the game. It would take out my aggressions on a particular group member that I'd love to either tell off, or throttle. Which is bad, since I'm not a violent person. But I do seriously want to just ... smack... this person.

Blah.

Work. Got a ton of stuff here to do as well. It's gotten to the point where I've taken my plate, set that aside, and started another plate. Perhaps I should just upgrade to a Turkey Platter? More room for more things on the "plate", and with all the extra space it might LOOK like there's not that much, right?

School <> (!=) Work

I left the lab last night at 12:15. I drove the main Flash-guru home, to continue work on the project from there. He told me there wasn't anything else I could help with. Still, I felt bad that he had to finish the rest of the work.

Wonder-boy left early last night. One the way home, the Flash-Guru mentioned that Wonder-boy redesigned the site with more primitive and less eloquent Flash Action scripting because he didn't understand how the Flash-Guru's menu worked, and then stuck the Guru with the work of putting the site together. So far, I've seen minimal effort from Wonder-boy. It's *JUST* enough to be a counted; to argue (he likes argueing) that he did work on the project.

I think we'd have been better off without his contributions, myself. We've redesigned the site numerous times to accommodate his (late) input. After the group would decide something, he'd show up a meeting or two later with a redesign.

*huffs*

Presentation today on the Project as a whole. I get to start us out, which is good in a way - cause then I can be quiet for the rest of the presentation. I hate presentations. Especially presentations I've not had time to prepare for.

Why do professors believe the business world works this way? Carved-In-Stone Deadlines, groups tossed together, and limited time frames? I've been in a business environment for almost ... oh ... 7+ years (Started working in an office when I was 15). And while deadlines are firm most of the time - they aren't carved in stone. Not nearly like academia. If the project due is going to cost the company more money in down-time or problems because it's not ready to roll, you better believe there's a honcho high enough to extend the deadline.

Presentation is tomorrow, and we've got to get things in order. Two group members have bailed already - one really early, and one just a few minutes ago. Discounting the group member who injured their back and couldn't come ... that leaves us with 4 people. I know I'm waning fast.

*sighs*

Will be glad when this is over. This is DEFINITELY one of those "four credit courses in three credit clothes". This has been far more work than any other four credit course I've taken at the U.

Time to call home, and then settle into working for a bit more. I'm not staying past midnight, or I won't be able to get up for work in the morning.

fate made me catch this today

I think. I had to drive to school because I was running late and missed the bus. On the Diane Rehm Show, they were discussing Identity theft and ways you could avoid being the target of Credit and Identity problems. One way was to reduce the amount of "You're pre-approved" junk in the mail. They gave a phone number to call, that connects to the three major credit bureaus:

1-888-5OPT-OUT

This magic number allows you to "opt out" of the pre-screened credit offerings from every-other-visa company in existance.

I'm going to call later today.

Ugh

Sick.

Fun.

Final week of school, too. Everything's due, of course.
