Topical Headers

For some unknown-as-of-yet reason, Blogger seems to be doing something odd to the first line after every header.

It's shrinking it. By one font size. I don't get it. The template doesn't SAY it's supposed to do that.

*scratches head*

Work was interesting today. I'm involved in this bizzaro work thing, an employee rewards program that I've babbled about on occasion. Well, our team - The Loan Rangers - is the largest team in the SPIRIT program. There are two coaches on each team, who sort of rally and lead the team. I'm a coach. So ... things get relegated to me, oftentimes.

And I like tech. I've banked some points there ... so I like doing things with a least a moderate level of technology. Our last SPIRIT thing was a video - which we ended up putting on a computer via an analog-capture cord and software, to edit. We produced the film in VHS - but a biproduct of having it on the computer was that we could make an MPEG file and burn that to a CD to give to folks in the company to see, providing they had an older machine with the sound still enabled. So, we did that.

Now ... some orniry people who shall remain nameless, have choosen to be orniry about the SPIRIT thing. The company gives us free food, throws parties for us, allows us to earn points and get things like DVD and CD players ... and they choose to be orniry about the whole thing. Okay. Well, they were orniry in today's meeting about our film, because it wasn't fair that we could allow ALL of our people to see our video.

Um ... wow. I offered to take their film, and put it on Mpeg format, and they flipped out. "Our team leaders wouldn't want people to watch a film all day."

Some people ... just ought to drink more. Relax, folks. I'd offer them a chill-pill, but I'm sure they'd perceive that as some threat to their person or claim it was being unfair to their team in some way, shape, or form.

It really must expend a lot of energy to be that angry and upset all the time.

Got a meeting tonight to go over WRAP database stuffs. Should be pretty quick - I'm just getting their "wishlist".

I wrote my first Append Query (real one) in the reporting database this morning. It worked! It did what I wanted it to! I was ... pleased :)

Rest of the day will be filled with a sprinkling of Underwriting, a WRAP meeting tonight, some minor cleaning of the house ... and diabloing.I actually did a few MOo runs last night - was fun. Got the sorceress up to 85.

To Blog or Not to Blog ...

Yea. I want to. I also read my friend's blogs, Jarrod's. Why? Not to replace any kind of social interaction ... but to suppliment.

Why do I blog? To do the same. My life's been insanely busy the last two weeks. If you called to do something -- chances are, I said I couldn't. Or wasn't home to answer the phone.

Don't get me wrong. I LIKE hanging out with my friends a great deal. Life, invariably, fills my time up with things I sometimes I were rather not involved in. That's life.

So ... I blog. I don't try and give folks the full monty. Just a bathing-suit view ... maybe a speedo on occasion. A tease. A slight sample thereof.
If you want the full monty, that's something best experienced in person, aye?

Bad metaphor, I know ... but that's what an undergrad degree in English at the U of M enables you to do: make bad metaphors. It's at least punctuated correctly ;)

And the thought occurred to Jarrod, who relayed it to me - I probably could have just asked Jack for help/advice. *smacks forehead*

Access 2

Is being MUCH better than Access 1. We actually have a decent instructor! The class is still moving much slower than I'd like ... mostly because of the audience it's geared towards. This is the "PC Computing" series - "Intro to Computer" type people. I'm rather not intro-level, so ... it's a bit slow.

Interesting enough, though, are the costs of these classes. $450 for Access 1 (It was NOT worth $450), $250 for Access 2 and $250 for Access 3. The *REAL* Access Training, in the "Technical Computing" series: "Mastering Access 97" -- $1250.

Ouch.

I learned two shortcut keys, and a tiny bit about many-to-many relationships. In Access, you just bridge them with two one-to-many's.

Success!!

WOW ... I won. Sheesh. Finally got the KFO Formmail working again. They were using "Matt's Script Archives" formmail, which worked fine. In the upgrade to the new server, they decided to go with a formmail clone of Matt's script (who is this matt, anyway?) in CGI (Matt's is in PERL). Their documentation on their formmail clone was to change the file from formmail.pl to FormMail.cgi and to use Matt's site for information on what commands to use in the form to recieve your mail and whatnot. Sound easy?

They LIED. At least, they didn't know they messed up.

As soon as the server switch occured, I changed the formmail file like their documentation stated. Formmail broke. It send the e-mail off to the list I specified, only, all the data fields in the form were missing. The only thing that it emailed over was the user-requested info that I was getting (IP, Browser, HTTP_AGENT stuffs). SO ... I played with it. Checked syntax (I'm bad with syntax). Nothing. I opened a tech support ticket last Thursday, which was lost by their server when their DB went down. I reopened a ticket Saturday morning. On monday morning, I check the ticket. It was closed ... with a closed date of 1969, no server tech closed it. *raises eyebrow*. I reopened it, and attempted to call them Monday night. No answer at Nomonthlyfees.

I called again Tuesday evening ... and got someone. After calling me "ma'am" and I correcting her, I gave her my ticket #. She said a tech would contact me right away. They did -- even though I specifically told them the steps I had taken BEFORE opening a ticket, they simply closed the ticket and said "read the documentation online."

Um. I did. Says so in the dang ticket. *slaps forehead*. I immediately REOPEN the thing, this time cutting and pasting code from the form and the resulting e-mail. Someone gets back to me in a hour or so, and says "Forwarding to a system programmer. They'll contact you in 24-48 hrs."

Hell ya!

Server guy comes back ... and says "If you can't get ours to work, install another formmail program. Thanks."

Hell no! That's not very helpful, now is it? Mr. Helpdesk person?

So ... I had Elric start working on getting a script working. He ran into some PERL error (I'm no good with PERL at all). I decided to tinker around with the form and see what fields it didn't like. One by one, I eliminated paremeters. And one magic-moment ... IT WORKED!

The "SORT" command wasn't processing in the CGI. Which means - if they were trying to exactly mimic Matt's PERL formmail code, they didn't include the SORT option or messed the sorting up. Either case, that is NOT documented anywhere, and that is NOT my error.

*Holds up an "I told you so" sign.*

GRR. I normally don't get so frustrated over things like this, but JEEZ. They kept telling me it was my problem, and it ultimately wasn't. And ONE WEEK after the initial request for help, we finally have forms working.

For the HTML/Formmail savvy: I had to HARDCODE the silly order into the field names on my form. A_Accountname, B_ICQ, C_RealName ... etc. to get them to show up in the right order in the e-mail. It looks ... low tech. I may not be super-duper-High-tech-Php-asp-Dhtml-Xhtml-Xml-man, but still.

Weekend

Let's see - POM was a blast. I saved the world. Sort of. As always, big twist tossed in. Kris's character (incidentilly, my wife), is pretty hosed. The campaign takes a turn ... I think it will be fun. My character just needs to figure out what to do with this silly Jewel ;) And how to get back into the social scene. Flora ... need to befriend Flora ... Hm.

Sunday: took my sweetie to the airport. *sigh*. I watched the two Tivoed episodes of Six Feet Under, then attempted to play diablo. The House ... was too ... quiet. Matthew called at 11:30ish, and said he was bored. We went out and about. Brunch at Cafe Zola - which is FABULOUS for brunch. I had an open-faced Italian omelette with roasted sweet potatoes, challah croutons, carmalized onions and goat cheese. WOW. Yummy. Then we went to Best Buy, where I failed to find anything to spend a B-day gift certificate at. Then to Linen's and things, COMPUsa - where I've fallen in love with the Ipod. Nifty toy! 'Spensive, though. The new Imac looks pretty cool, too. We stopped briefly at the mall, then proceeded to Bed, Bath and Beyond. Matthew suggested stopping at Toys`R`Us to look for video games .. and I'm glad he suggested it! We FOUND TWO new copies of Final Fantasy Tactics!! I thought the game was out of print. $15.00 for the game. We bought them both, headed home and tried it out. It's very complex.

I made dinner on the grill, cause it was hot in the house. I stole ideas from Kristen G - roasted a vidalia onion, banana, carrots and bratwurst for dinner. Grilled Banana for dessert! Then it was time for KFO meetings ... which were a bit tedious. Played with Sharon and Brad thereafter (and Dotti) ... and had fun. Been a while since I've done multiplayer D2. Life's been a bit ... hectic. Things are settling, which is good.

Still miss my sweetie. I didn't sleep well last night. 4 days till he gets back from the evil conference in WI.

A TAN Dragon Lies Beneath!

I took the Inner Dragon online quiz and found out I am a Tan Dragon on the inside. My Inner Dragon is the true draconic magic-user. Tans have been all but forgotten in popular literature, but that suits us just fine. We're very shy and spend most of our time hidden in impassable mountain valleys. Every so often we do get a little brave and use shape-shifting to blend in with society. Given a choice, however, Tans still much prefer to be left to their own devices.

I like to spend time devising new and interesting spells, and counting my gigantic treasure. My favorable attributes are longevity, security, magic, and reverence for life. To top it off, my breath weapon is a curious mix of Fire and Air. Just tell folks to watch out, like all Tans I've got a seriously short temper!

If I were an Amber-type character (0 being the average-Earth born human[oid]).

Pschye: 10
Endurance: 0
Strength: -2
Warefare: 2

Powers/abilities:
Technology: 5 points. Just enough to know there's way more I can know, and tweak things with the "long way" to get it to do something neat.
Computers: 12 points. Enough to break them well, know how to run circles around a majority of folks, and know that when the shit hits the fan, I can call a real tech.
English: 9 points. Better than the average Native Speaker, I think.
Fast read: 2 points. Not TOO fast.
Detect Active Electronic Device: 1 point. I can HEAR when a TV is on ... even if there's no sound coming from the TV (IE, a blank screen, but the power is still on).
Photo Memory: 2 points. Pretty decent at remembering stuff.
Communication: 5 points. I'm a pretty good arbitor. KFO stuff forced me to be.

Stuff: 0. Some days good ... some days not. I vacilate.

Guess that makes me a 46 point character. I figure, 2 points a year ... sounds reasonable.

My Home, Sweet Home
From: Final Fantasy V ~ Dear Friends (PSCN-5018)
Music by: Nobuo Uematsu

So far away from my home, sweet home
Day by day, from land to land I roam
Though told by the wind which way to go
Oh, how I long for my home, sweet home

Boaše ruoktot alot go dan dovtat tuski
Boaše ruoktot alot go dan dovtat vaivui
Du ruoktu vuordą du alot
Du ruoktu vuordą du alot

(Trans: You can come home in times of harshness
You may come home in times of sorrow, too
Your home will be waiting for you forever
It will be waiting for you forever)

Fragrant blossoms blooming far away--
Do my folks see them as I did long ago?
Are they still joyful? Are they young at heart?
Will I see them again as I did that day?

Bearaš, ushbat
Ruoktu, muitut
Dat ca goassige
Vajaldahtc du

(Family, friends
Home and memories
No one will ever
Forget about you)

How far I've come from my childhood home!
There will come a time when my troubles are gone
And when I shall not be all alone--
Till then, I dream of my home, sweet home

Meahcci, cącit
Albmi, eana
Dat buot vurdet du
Dat buot vurdet du

(Forest, stream
Sky and earth
Everyone is waiting)

It's just ... gross.

Not to mention what the people do to their lungs.

I think folks ought to have a choice in the matter - yes. If you make tobacco illegal, then you increase the crime rates. You flood the prisons, bog down the legal system. But ... I think discouragement on something like this, is a good thing. Make restaurants non-smoking. Raise the age to 21. I consider tobacco far more harmful than alcohal - and yet, we can purchase it when we are 18 years old.

I condone California's initiative.

I have my new song obsession.

"Home, Sweet Home" is officially the Song I Will Obsess About. It has replaced Lara Fabian's "The Dream Within".

blogger is being a MAJOR pain. It won't deal with my archives correctly. I can't pick a new template. Gives me the same mojo-error: "Character not allowed on server".

What the freakin' bloody hell? Gr.

HMMmm...just read through the cover while I wait for this DB to "compact". I was wrong. the "Home, Sweet Home" track isn't in Japanese and English, it's in Saami and English. From the CD jacket:

"The tracks on this album from FFV were recorded in Helsinki, Finland. Finnish female vocalist group Angelin Tytot sang tracks like Home, Sweet Home (track 10) in Saami, the ancient language of the native Laplanders. Legend of the Deep Forest (track 4) features a monologue in Japanese and Saami chants blended with the original song ..."

- Chris Kohler, Final Fantasy N Generation CD Jacket

Cool. Guess I need to try and find more info on Saami ... or see if there's a translation out there somewhere!

Bought a CD Saturday: "Final Fantasy N Generation". Music (orchestral) from Final Fantasy 1 through 6. There's a song on there that is REALLY neat: "Home Sweet Home," from FFV. I have access to that game through the re-release on the PS1. The game itself was kind of cheesy - but I'll eventually play it.

Anyway, the song is intrigueing. They seem to be blending English AND Japanese in the Lyrics. Usually they write a Japanese version, and then translate it to English. This one is a blend. And curious how the Japanese translates. Will have to ask Kristen if she wouldn't mind listening to it for me :) Might do some web spuelunking to see if I can find out on my own, though.

Saturday

deck! we finished it! THANK ALL THE GOD(esse)S THAT DO OR MIGHT EXIST. We're officially on respite from yard-work for a few weeks. We'll resume working on things at the END of the month, maybe.

The soreness went away sometime Saturday. It just ... vanished. Going to attempt to be a bit more physically active. I think starting twice a week biking for 30 minutes should get me going. I'd bike to POM if it weren't going to be at my house for the summer months ;)

Sunday

Was fun! Got up late (played D2x late), mowed the lawn to make it look nice, and got ready for the party. Sunday was reparations day, too -- working on the deck for such a long duration sort of put Jarrod and I at odds. Having it finally done, helped a lot.

He got me a neat new toy for my birthday - a digital camera! It's small, powerful -- fun! Started playing with it a bit. Will post pics from the party when I get some time to figure it all out ;)

Lots of friends stopped by to say hi and be social. A few folks couldn't make it -- which was a bummer -- but I understand. It was a beautiful day, I spent most of it outside in the nice weather.

today

Suprise - I don't feel much like work. I feel like I haven't had much of a break the last two weeks, which is probably compounding the issue. I'd like to be spending the day playing D2, sitting with my sweetie, and just unwinding. Ah well.

Another Busy Week

A CutCo person is coming over tonight so Jarrod and I can look at Knives (we like CutCo ... GOOD cutlery). We're having dinner with a former classmate of mine and his wife on Wednesday. Was going to try and goto James' Champions game on Thursday. Saturday is the Amber campaign (POM) I play in - where we're going to fix the Universe. Well, I'm going to fix the Universe. Or die trying ;) That's just HOMElife, too!
Work: finishing a training manual today and tommorow. Meeting tommorow and Wednesday. Training on the Access DB Friday and Monday next. Ikes. Busy week! I think I'll be able to just veg Sunday - and my sweetie will be gone :-(. He has to venture to Milwaukee for a week to learn how to manage. Er - I think he does just fine, thanks. Could we waive that neccesity? Not looking forward to having him missing for a week. *sighs*
