I get to kick someone from the guild today.

Joy.

The Magic tourney was fun. I got 3rd place. Got mana screwed in the 2 matches I lost in. It was a pretty nifty deck.

People don't read directions.

I've been a facilitator for my department's employee rewards program for about 9 months now. In December, we decided to go with a new merchandise company for our "exchange earned points for prizes" system, so, I made REPEATED, PROLONGED, EXPLICIT and NUMEROUS communications informing people what they needed to do to get their prizes and cash from the company from the points that they had earned. We closed out 2001's program on January 31, 2002. All the old stuff expired on February 28th.

Here it is, almost April 1st, and what do I get? Someone at my desk, going ... "Um...Hi. I was waiting to get my $25.00 check. I didn't bother reading any of the instructions you sent me, nor did I bother reading the award certificate you gave me with the big-old expiration date marked 'FEBRUARY 28, 2002'. Could you fix this?"

Well, ok. She didn't really say that. But you know, I could respect someone's stupidity if they were at least honest about it.

*grumble*

On other fronts ... the KFO is much calmed. I think all the fires are out. Yay. It's induced more of my stress than it should, really. Somedays, I don't know why I run for office in that organization.

And I'm considering running again. Call me a mental-masochist, I guess. I don't know why I do it. Don't know why it matters to me. I know it causes stress. I know it sucks on some days. *shrugs*

Finished with a rather neat novel for class yesterday. Mary Renault's Last of the Wine. It's about a noble Athenian youth, who helps defend his City during the last years of the Pelopenesian War (Circa 450 BC). He falls in love with Lysis, also a man of noble Athenian upbringing. It's Gone with the Wind for Gay Men. Intrigue, slander, loss of the Good Life, and two hunky Athenian Athletes. It's tastefully done, though.

That is in stark contrast for the next novel for class, Mark Merlis' An Arrow's Flights. The first scene in the Novel is Pyrrhus (Also known as Neoptolomus, son of Achilles) flopping his big, hard dick onto the table at the strip club he's employed at (Merlis desribes it so, I'm not exagerating for crassness). First scene, mind you. He's mentioned many times in the first 40 pages about Pyrrhus' endowment. Many times. (And several times about how small full divinty's -- Zeus, Achilles -- are. Very Small).

That's the difference between gay men and lesbians, I think. Renault writes a sweeping love story between two men. Merlis writes of taudry sex.

I'm enjoying the new book, too.

Wow.

Where'd my day go?

I'm quickly turning into the 'project guy' at work. In the last week, I've written/created 3 powerpoint presentations, been to 3 meetings, tweaked more on an access database, played around with some Excel stuff ... Oi.

My new boss was chatting at the printer yesterday (which is right outside my cube). Said something to the affect of "Gosh, Patrick, I don't really know WHAT you do."

Hope that doesn't hurt my bonus and review. *gulp*

Monday, March 25, 2002

Well!

Wednesday last, blogger wouldn't load on the puter. Thursday was packing and going to Ambercon ... Friday, Saturday and Sunday were Con, and got home today.

That accounts for the gap.

so! Con. Was fun :) I had a BLAST in Jennifer Crice's game. That makes three games I've been in with her as GM, and all three were neat. She likes characters. She usually pregenerates them, and they seem to mean something to her. There's a lot of time spent there. They're interesting. She's fun.

In contrast, I've played in another GM's games three times now, too. They're a nice person, really. Sweet. Smart. But we don't get along in game. I'm pretty sure it's only one way -- they seem to not notice anything wrong. I guess it boils down to control, really. I'm not a control freak. I'm there to have fun. This GM likes to control things in their game -- which is great, to an extent. But when I'm not doing anything terribly huge, not affecting the game much, and get snapped at for it? I don't think so. It might be that this GM is just "in character", but it doesn't feel that way to me. I've been snapped at once in every game I've been in. So ... adding this GM to my "do not play in games run by" list. Three games. Three strikes. I do know other people enjoy the games immensely. Chalking it up to a difference of opinion, I suppose. But then again -- the people who like the games are often blood initiated into some odd circle of AmberCon-ers, and I know I haven't given blood at one yet. Maybe that's the case.

Anywho ... played in two neat games with a local person, James Arnoldi. He works where I work, too, Interfirst. I played a female manipultive trump-thief in his "Heist" game (paint the noble's portrait, paint the nobles house, trump in, snatch stuff, trump out). We had to steal the biggest hit of all -- the Jewel of Judgement. Ya. That didn't work. AT ALL. I lived, though. Many, many others didn't. His other game was a Matrix-based scenario. I played Mat Cauthon, from Robert Jordon's Wheel of Time Series. Mat is NOT a powers character. He was a youth who was granted memories of millenia of general's memories. He's a good fighter and planner. I got 95 points to work with (points were assigned at the Con to level different people off to the same strata, since it could be any character from any book or gaming system). Since it was Mat, I dumped 70 points into warfare, 5 points in strength and 10 in endurance. (I got 5 bonus points for bringing a picture of Mat). I then sunk 15 points into "Quarterstaff/Spear mastery", which means that when I'm using a quarterstaff or spear, I get DOUBLE what I spent on the mastery added to my warfare. Which means, with a spear, I had 100 warfare. Found out later that the PCs were based on 100 points. Which means ... I rocked. I kicked just about anyone's arse who came at me. It was a GREAT game, and not just 'cause I kicked Arse. He's a neat GM. He likes details. I came from a midevil world, and so he made it a point to describe all the high-tech stuff in different terms. "You're on a big boat that seems to be made of all metal..." "You see a very tall window up ahead..." (skyscraper). "Someone with a thick metal rectangular box is approaching you. They seem to be pointing one end at you..."

He was neat.

So ... overall, it was fun. Relaxing to get away from the rigormorol of KFO drama, parental drama, bills and school.

I'm stressing about cash, now, since my bank account is looking meager, but ... eh. Just have to conserve a bit until pay-day, I guess. I get a bonus at the end of April, which will help.

I think I'm going to run a game at the next con I go to. I really, really am. I don't care if it fops. I think it'll be better than some of the games I've been a player in.

Performance anxiety, be gone.

Many, many meetings last night. Ick.

Ambercon approaching fast! I'm playing Mat Cauthon from the WOT series by Robert Jordan for one of my games. I've outlined his powers as:
1) Super Lucky. Unreal luck .. almost .. Divine.
2) FAST. VERY good with a quarterstaff. VERY .. as in ... I will laugh at you with your sword, and can back that up.
3) Decent with a bow and a sling.

Oh ... and he totally tries to shirk responsibility. He should be fun ;)

I'm also conspiring with a player in another game to try and hose the other PC's. It's an "Eric-rules, Corwin never attacked" game. Which means Brand, Fi and Bleys could still be cabaling. Which means ... dad planted me in Amber to spy. Good old psycho dad. Gotta love him.

Eh. Looking forward to it. I'm also taking the laptop so I can log into the KFO meeting Sunday night from the hotel. Gotta install AO-HELL and mIRC on the laptop, now.

I'm actually in a fine mood today. But, Grr. Insincere people. I know he's just trying to be polite, but that's all it is, really. You can be polite without being fake. Just say "Hi." or "Good Afternoon." Or "Hey."

But pretending you care, is just impolite, really.

I had a dental appointment yesterday with an Oral Surgeon. He has a master's in philosophy, as well as his dental degree. Weird mix.

The wisdom teeth have to come out. I'm thrilled (dripping sarcasm).

He's going to knock me out. (required).
He's taking ALL FOUR at once (required).

I have a 7% chance of dry socket. From all the stories that you (my friends) are all MORE than eager to tell me, this is the part that will suck ass. Dry Socket = More pain than a lance-ride to hell. Grand.

I have a 1% chance of infection. Antibiotics will fix that, I'm told.

I have a 1 in 700 chance of exposing my sinus when he removes the top teeth. This means I can't sneeze of blow my nose hard for a week. Uh... How do you NOT SNEEZE? I don't voluntarily do that now.

I have a 1 in 1000 chance of him pinching the nerve that allows me to feel my lips. He claims this heals on its own in time.

They're giving me pain meds, of the "V" variety that I couldn't remember, but that Jarrod said was Vicadin. I'm supposed to take one immediately when I get home, and one every 4 hours thereafter. I'm also supposed to put ice on my cheeks for 24-36 hours, 30 minutes on each side. So...er...do I get to sleep?

Then I'm supposed to put heat on it. Heating pad. Guess I need to purchase one of those.

And, I'm supposed to take gauze and shove it in my teeth and clamp down whenever I taste ick. Fun.

The worst part: nothing to eat OR drink for 6 hours prior. 9am surgery time ... COFFEE. I...won't...get....coffee. I guess the vicadin and anastetic will take care of the caffiene-headache.

Supposedly, I'm supposed to be back to normal functioning in a day or three, and be in the green within a week. Assuming I don't roll any of those odds up there.

I've bad luck with rolling.

I'm trying not to remember ANY of it. It refuses to go away.

KFO database is done. I can't count on anyone else to do the damn thing. It's tweaked back into a managable excel format. I think I know enough of access to do it there, now. That is ... I know how to lay it out and table it. I'm still learning queries and reports. Joy.

My day, thus far:

  1. Wed's my "late morning". Woke up at 8am. showered. dressed.

  2. Starbucks. Grande Vanilla Latte.

  3. Class this morning (the ancient greek and gay one). Got my BIG paper back (it's the largest chunk of my grade). She was preachy about them, which got me worried. Got mine back .... lots of comments ... some good ... some bad ... "A" on the back. Said I'm a talented writer. If were a kitty, I woulda been purrin.

  4. Skipped American Culture. Read a novel (for class novel) on the diag. listened to hairy-beard man and retro-girl chat about the summer-job program to save the artic.

  5. Met Matthew for lunch. Was fun. Korean food was yummy. Conversation was fun. Wish I had more time to just hang out.

  6. Darted to my car, which was 1 hour overdue on meter-money. No ticket. Yay. One of these days, though ....

  7. To work. Called the sweetie on the cell. He doesn't have a WRAP meeting tonight, madam pres moved it to tomorrow. Cool.

  8. Work. 3 voicemails -- none work related. Grumble. Two from Dad, who's depressed as hell. They took mom's car last night: default, failure to pay. She's in hyper-bitch mode, most likely. One from Byars something-or-other. I'm getting a 1/4 of a cow, for cheap. They wanna know how to package it. Preferably cut into pieces, please. Moo.

  9. E-mail check (work and yahoo), nothing too interesting. KFO forums ... which are kinda quiet (yay). Read Matthew's and Wendi's blog. He really deserves to meet someone non-flakey and fun; the drawing is coming along very well.

  10. Blogged.

Word of the Day for Tuesday March 12, 2002:

desideratum \dih-sid-uh-RAY-tum; -RAH-\, noun;
plural desiderata:
Something desired or considered necessary.

Coffee! *sips*

Went to class yesterday. I circumnagivated the building and found an entrance unguarded. I really, when it boils down to it, hate confrontation. Which is why, whenever Jarrod and I disagree on things, I usually just leave the conversation (IE the room), much to his dismay. *shrugs* To completely understand, you'd need a Masters in Social work or Psychology or something or spend a good month with my mother. And trust me, you'd prefer to get the Masters.

So ... mothers. Mine's pissy-upset that Jennette and I didn't "consult" her about changing plans for Kristen's and Jason Co-Birthday Celebration. Um .. hello? You don't work. You don't do anything. I work, go to school AND try and operate an online group. And I have a life. Jennette works two jobs AND has a life. I think our schedules are a bit harder, anyways. She wasn't pissed at the day we wanted -- she just wanted to Woe Is Me about how she's not feeling well, how she'll have to clean the house all day, how she'll have to cook. Jennette and I offered to take everyone out. And she *never* feels well. Not in the 20 years I've been keeping track.

Besides ... Kristen's and Jason's birthdays really aren't about mom. That's April. Deal.

Hmph.

Work was fun yesterday. The windstorm over the weekend damaged one of the building's transformers. It didn't blow it out, just caused it to fluctuate. The transformer threatened was the 6th and 7th floor power grids -- IE, everything we plug into the wall. Computers, desklights. So, at 2pm, they took the grid down. It never did come back up. I bummed time off Chris's computer on 3 to work on the Access project. That's finally coming along. I don't 100% understand it .... but... that's what Wizards are for, right :) ?

I guess I'm going because I don't know if I can afford to miss class and not turn in this "reading response" non-sense.We have readings for every class period. There are no exams ... and no quizes. But, she polices our reading (even if she claimed at the beginning of class that she's not going to police our reading). We have to turn in a one-page response to the reading. No topics, no questions to consider, nothing to answer; we're just instructed to "respond to the reading".

"Reading Response for March 11th

Uhh ... This book sucks. I love reading mindless drivel on a topic that's so controversial as 'museums'. When there are basic rights that I still don't have and can still be arrested in this state for my sexual preference ... yea. Museums matter. Lets reform them, Hm? Make them more ethnographically correct...hm?"

There. There's my response.

Having a dilema.

GEO, the campus Graduate Instructor's Union, is having a rough patch in renegotiating their contract with the U. They always have a rough time, it seems. Monday, they are supposed to stage a walk-out. Picket lines, etc. They're asking the academic body (students and staff) to not walk into any U building Monday (essentially -- "please don't cross our picket lines.) I e-mailed my Monday prof to ask her about her stance, no word yet.

So ... do I cross the lines? Do I attend class on Monday? Attendance, of course, is mandatory. I have a "reading response" paper due tomorrow, a 1-pager. I could e-mail that, but, the prof doesn't have to accept it.

What to do, what to do. The U is inherently evil. Non-profit my ass. 4-and-some-odd BILLION (with a "B", that's not a type-o) in investment assets, and they can't give 50% of their instruction staff a small child-care stipend. *snorts* Why don't you funnel some of that Life-Science-bullshit into keeping the cost of living and tuition down at your up-tight institution.

I think I might just not go. Support GEO. *slaps on a button*

So ... Matthew found a plush crafty-looking Vivi Doll in a comic store in A2. Who's Vivi? Glad you asked. He's one of the two main characters (well, I consider him a main character since he drives a good chunk of the story) in Final Fantasy IX. He's a Black Mage -- a manaufactured thing that was supposed to just destroy. He ended up getting a soul. He acts like a little-kid, almost. Trips a lot, dusts himself off. He's smart, he just has no common-sense, no understanding of the world-system that he's suddenly stranded in.

And he's just so cute!

My favorite character, by far. That and he casts Black Magic that just ROCKS.

But anyway .. Matthew found this ... told me about it ... and I HAD TO HAVE IT.

Now he's in an honored place on my desk.

Am I supposed to guess? Stumble across them?

I have to get this special item thats eluded to twice and hinted at once (briefly, can't get the re-hint). Then goto the last boss. Then execute a series of elemental spells: I have to cast 6 spells, consecutively, without the other guy interupting with his own spell, and then cast this 7th new-spell. Then I save the day, time is restored ... and the game ends well.

Yar. That's not tedious.

Beat Chrono Cross last night. Suck ending. There's GOT to be multiple endings. The game stresses choices, in fact, small choices dramatically affect the flow of the game. Gunna have to figure out how to get a better ending.

Grumble.

Which Classic Book Are You?
Book: Homer's The Iliad.

Synopsis: The Iliad is one of the two great epics of Homer, and is typically described as one of the greatest war stories of all time, but to say the Iliad is a war story does not begin to describe the emotional sweep of its action and characters: Achilles, Helen, Hector, and other heroes of Greek myth and history in the tenth and final year of the Greek siege of Troy.

Excerpt: Thus then were the Achaeans hemmed in at their ships, calling out to one another and raising their hands with loud cries every man to heaven. Nestor of Gerene, tower of strength to the Achaeans, lifted up his hands to the starry firmament of heaven, and prayed more fervently than any of them. 'Father Jove,' said he, 'if ever any one in wheat-growing Argos burned you fat thigh-bones of sheep or heifer and prayed that he might return safely home, whereon you bowed your head to him in assent, bear it in mind now, and suffer not the Trojans to triumph thus over the Achaeans.'

Day's gone pretty quickly by. Class this morning *yawn*. Tried to hook up with Matthew for lunch cause class let out early -- didn't work out. Read my Wheel of Time novel, which was entertaining. Got to work, talked a bit with dad, who sounds *REALLY* down. Dunno if I can do anything to help pick him back up. *shrugs* Read e-mail, still waiting for my GM for Ambercon to post Round 1 e-mail auction results. No dice, yet. Met for SPIRIT (work thingie) ... and now it's 2pm already.

Hmph.

That would be the story I saw. Mac Lovers Strike Back. Fun ;)

It's not that I don't like Macs. It's that they do things totally UN-pc, and I haven't had any experience with them. My High school used PCs. My friends all used PCs. The office I worked at used 'em. I bought a PC when I graduated High School ... and just kept going. Work uses PCs. Home has 3. *shrugs*

I had a friend once tell me that I failed being a smart-person cause I couldn't figure out a Mac when I sat down at it. Which, I thought -- do you blame a Fish for not knowing how to fly? I can muddle through a Mac. But as far as knowing where this elusive "system-file" is and what it does (I can make a few assumptions, I think .. sounds like the Kernal), or being able to argue even the basic points of OS X versus OS 9 -- sorry. I haven't been geeked out on them yet, I haven't sat my butt down in front of a Mac with enough spare time to play on it. My Mac experience is limited, currently, to desperate rounds of trying to open and print Word documents to make paper-deadlines when ALL the pCs in Angell Hall are full.

But if someone wants to SHOW me .... I'd watch and listen.

Huge project handed to me at work. I get to learn MsAccess.

I'm not sure if this is a prayer from the heavens, or a curse from hell. We'll see. It's Microsoft. Lower your shields and surrender your soul. They will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to their own. Your PC, TV, MAC, gaming console, EVERYTHING will adapt to service them. Resistance is futile.

Something in the Detriot News this morning when I was waiting for my latte. "Mac ...something or other". Gunna head over and see what the fuss was about.

I didn't blog...all...weekend.

miss me?

Wasn't feeling well at all ... so... skipped the Aaron weekend-game thing. Slept and played Chrono. Felt half-way decent in the evening.

Sunday: I read for class (ugh), and played Moo Moo farm runs in Diablo as well as a little bit of Chrono. I'm getting close to the end. Awesome story!

Today: Still feeling blah. Sore-throat thing won't go away completely. It's still lingering.

Spring break needs to be two weeks long ;)

Back to the grindstone. Gotta try and make this file work.

Massage ... fabulous. Sheila at Intouch made me melt. First woman to do that in a while ;)

Day off ... superb. I've got this throaty-sore thing started, but I ignored it all day.

Chrono Cross ... I'm in the last area now.

Overall, nice day off.
